SCORING BY JURY AND THE TEST DRIVERS

Within each of these categories there are up to eight criteria. Each criterion is given a score between 1 and 10, with 10 being the best score possible, the higher the score the better.

Each vehicle’s overall score reflects its position within the class and should only be compared within its category. The scores for each criterion are weighted – CRITICAL, HIGH, MEDIUM OR LOW – according to their importance to buyers. This weighting varies by category.

The Jury score is rated 40 percent and the public test drive rated 60 percent. The winner is the one weighted with the highest score in a category. Awards like Brand of the year, Tyre Brand of the year, Auto Company of the year, Auto insurance and finance company of the year and Excellence in CSR will be based on information provided by nominee, supporting documents, perception research by Nielson.

Value for Money

Indicative Drive Away Pricing: The manufacturer or dealer pricing is considered and the cost of registration at DVLA added to get drive away price. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Cost of Depreciation: Vehicles are ranked by the cost of depreciation in dollars or percentage value as supplied by manufacturer or dealer. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Running and Repair Costs: A comparison of calculated scheduled servicing and repair costs over the warranty given by manufacturer of dealer typically replacement components including tyres and brakes. Running and Repair costs takes into account “fixed or capped ”price servicing or “service included in the purchase price” where offered by the vehicle manufacturers or dealers.
Fuel Consumption: The fuel consumption score takes into consideration the fuel consumption rate as supplied by manufacturer or dealer, and is ranked across all vehicles in the program. Scores are calculated using the same methodology and applied across all categories of vehicles.
Warranty & Dealer Access: Warranty scores include points based on years of standard warranty from the manufacturer. Standard warranty is defined as the original standard manufacturer warranty that is sold with that vehicle and is not subject to any restrictions of dealer inspections and dealer only servicing to activate a warranty extension. Scores are calculated using the same methodology and applied across all categories of vehicles.
Insurance: Insurance is rated if dealer provides comprehensive insurance as a package for a drive away price. Also vehicles with lower insurance premiums receive higher scores. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Standard Features: Jury rates a list of the features (including safety features), which are provided as standard. The more features and its ability to bring comfort the better. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.

Design & Function

Safety: The vehicle’s standard dynamic safety features are considered vis-a-vis protecting the drivers life. Scores are calculated using the same methodology and applied across all categories of vehicles.
Environment: It is rated based on fuel consumption and emissions as provided by the manufacturer and perception score by our research group. Scores are calculated using the same methodology and applied across all categories of vehicles.
Seating Comfort: All seat shaping, support and comfort. In the Family Car category, Jury assesses seating comfort in the front, middle and third row. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Space: Interior dimensions, including the occupant and luggage area, as measured by Jury and public. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Practicality: This is an assessment of the vehicle's practicality for its intended use and includes access, versatility and convenience. Consideration is given to cargo/storage areas, seat folding or removal, seat belts and child restraint and locks. Scores are calculated using the same methodology and applied across all categories of vehicles.
Ergonomics: This is the assessment of user interaction. It encompasses the interior design, and the position, layout, access and operation of all controls and facilities. It incorporates the human aspects of usability and how the occupants interface with the machine. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Build Quality and Finish: An examination for the standard of assembly, painting, trim materials, quality and finish. Scores are determined within each vehicle category

On-Road Performance

Performance: Measured acceleration. This is combined with an assessment of every-day drivability. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Ride: The road test panel’s assessment of the vehicle's suspension compliance and ride comfort. Scores are determined within each vehicle category
Handling: The vehicle's stability, precision and control in cornering manoeuvres, as judged by Jury and Test Drivers. This includes steering sensitivity, response and road feedback when on ramps. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Braking: This is a combination of measurements using the electronic road test equipment and the assessment of the include emergency braking performance, stability, controls and pedal feel. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Smoothness and Quietness: This includes both measurement and evaluation of Noise, Vibration and Harshness levels of the vehicle's engine, transmission, suspension and body refinement. Scores are determined within each vehicle category.
Off Road Ability: This is assessed during off road testing and is presented as one overall score for SUVs and 4x4 is and specific aspects like gearing and off-road engine performance is considered. Off-Road will only be assessed based on Jury's discretion
